I always liked the observation, “We went to a social gathering and a match broke out.” A friendly gathering closing with a social event involving some kind of food and honoring the workers and not the winners will go a long ways to get more people to carry the boat. The reaction always needs to be about serving others first and self last.
Dennis is quite correct in stating the club must be perceived as a generous host who will make the visitor extremely comfortable and leave with a desire to return.
This is well stated Dustin,we met at the lever action nationals in New Mexico. You are very right about the strong personality part and also correct that our sports future depends on us working together. Here in California a club where I shoot several times per year holds the lever action state championship every other year. The club is not very big and doesn't have a lot of funds and they put on absolutely the best matches, both monthly and the big state championship. A small group of mostly regular shooters do all the work and they have not been able to break even many years from what I hear. If their club is like ours, the folks at the membership meetings are not the same ones we see at the range. We need to also bridge this gap too; and somehow facilitate the gaging of the success of these fine matches on something other than dollars and cents. Our club has been fairly flush with funds, but very low on participation partly because offhand shooting isn't easy so I/we will try allowing shooters to use the bench.
Very good points Jay. It sounds like you guys have some folks that are thinking about how to get participation up and make the matches better. Keep it up!

This is a great observation Mr. Dennis! I've never seen anyone complain about too much food and fun at a silhouette match!
