Great post Dustin. I can’t disagree with anything you said. It took me a year with my custom 1712 to shoot better scores with it than my CZ452. 24x is probably the best power and a 3/8” or larger dot reticle best for silhouette. Keep the posts coming.
Do you think that it took you a year to get used to the new rifle or do you think that you just improved after a year of practice and started shooting better scores?
I had been shooting my CZ for about 2 years at that point and was very accustomed to it. I was consistently shooting mid AAA scores with it at that time and would say that it took about a year after getting my Custom 1712 to break into master class. My scores did dip a bit with the new rifle even though it fit me better than the CZ did. It was also at this point that we started shooting matches year round (when I started running the matches). We only shot from February through September in those days IIRC. After investing in the custom rifle and not being an avid hunter, I wanted to shoot year round to get more return on my investment and to get better with the new rifle. I did get better with the new rifle, but it still took me about a year to get to master class with it.
On another note, I did bump up in scope magnification from a weaver T-24 to a Leup. FX-III 30x. There might have been some getting used to the magnification involved in that too, but maybe not. I don't recommend anyone try shooting scopes over 24x until they make master class and consistently shoot at least low master scores. Then you will have the hold necessary to manage the higher magnification.
I'm a completely new and a beginner at this silhouette shooting I have a CZ 457 American with a 6x24 fine line reticle scope I also have a CZ 457 MTR with a target. Scope do you suggest I switched the Scopes from one gun to the other also I would like if possible a list of good practicing regiment
I have a CZ 457 American with a vortex scope on it with a fine line reticle I also have a 457 MTR with a leupold 1/ 8-in MOA dot on it should I switch the Scopes out swap them and use the CZ 457 American for silhouette small board shooting
Okay thank you last year I started out as a rookie yet Ridgway I use the CZ 457 American which is the hunter version I thought using the CZ 457 MTR heavy barrel would be easier to hold on
Thank you Dustin your words attitude and experience are mountains of worth to me !!!
Thanks, Dustin! I wasn't sure they were still in business. I had some great work done by Bill in the '90s on a couple Weaver target scopes.

I don’t think I understand your question about the scopes. Can you clarify?
I’m going to do a multi-part post on practicing soon.

If both rifles are legal, I think you should put the scope you like best on the rifle you like best and use that one.
The “best” rifle and scope are the ones you like best and shoot best.

Is anyone doing power bumps, target knobs, or reticle changes on older Leupold 12X target scopes?
I would call Cheryl Ackerman at Optical Services Company. https://targetshooteroptics.com/Home_Page.php
